John Hicks

Cawton farmer John Hicks is the new district councillor for the Amotherby ward which includes Broughton.

The fourth generation to be born at Cockpit Farm, he has a strong family links with the National Farmers’ Union as well as being vice-chairman of the committee trying to organise the future of Malton’s livestock market. His great-great-grandfather, Richard Hicks, was a butcher and farmer who lived in Slingsby.

John and his wife Louise, whom he met at a dance in Habton village hall, have 3 sons, Edward, Richard and William. As a family they support tennis and rugby clubs in Malton and are keen cyclists.

An avid supporter of Malton in general and the livestock market in particular, John is a hands-on farmer who enjoys his work on the family’s mixed farm, despite the long days.

He sees serving as a district councillor as a public service: “I’m giving my time for free, I won’t be claiming any expenses or salary – I don’t believe that’s right,” he said. “I want to do my best for everyone and would like to thank all those who voted for me.”

Anyone seeking to contact Cllr Hicks for help is advised to phone. He promises to return any calls that cannot be taken immediately.
