John and Eliza Paulin

Jeff Paulin with grandma Eliza Paulin

John was born just in Scotland at Lady Kirk close to Berwick-upon-Tweed.  He met Eliza after moving to Yorkshire to find work.  At one time he worked for the Malton Co-operative. He was also a cobbler who spent many evenings mending footwear for locals. He also worked on the land for local farmers.

The couple  had 7 children. Wilfred was born in Wintringham on 21.06.1898. The family moved to Swinton before settling in Broughton around 1901. Wilf was about 3 years old when they moved into 4 Flowery Hill.

Wilfred’s siblings were brothers George, killed in the 1st World War in France on 09.04.1917;  Eddie who died March 1916;  Jim who died in February 1919;  and Claude who was a cowman working on farms in the York and Selby areas.

Eddie and Jim were to be reunited with their parents in Amotherby Cemetery where Margaret Paulin is also buried. Margaret was the wife of Jeff, Wilf’s only surviving son.

Wilf also had 2 sisters Florence who married a York-based builder and Eva.

After John’s death in 1931 Eliza moved the following year to live with Eva and her husband Harold Spaven in York.
