Signing

John Lund signing over the parchments.

The decision to make the parchments a gift rather than a loan was made by John Lund, chairman of Broughton Parish Meeting.

John is pictured left signing the document which made them a gift rather than just a loan  Pictured on the right NYCC  photographer Richard Jemison sets up the photograph of the handover.

Handing over the parchments, John said it was the best place for them to be in the North Yorkshire County Council Record Offices.

He is personally funding an interpretation of the parchments so that the parish can be certain of their significance.    The parchments, which are made out of sheep skin, were kept over the years by various different clerks to Broughton Parish Meeting. While all would do their best to protect them, none had the expertise to look after such historical documents to the high standards reached in a professional archives department.
